Modern Conveniences?

Have you ever had no water in your home? Well, it's not fun. You can't shower, use the toilet, clean your house or do laundry, and so on...

One of the downfalls to living on top of a hill out in the country is that you need water pumps to get the water up the hill to the house. Sometimes (often!!!) the pumps go out, or components of the pumps go out, most of the time right in the middle of a shower, or doing laundry. Well, that is what has been happening at my house for the last 5 days. It's been the only nightmare about our log home since we moved in.

The last owners of this house forgot to mention it was their ongoing nightmare, so they passed it on to us!! Isn't that nice of them???

Back to the easel today after a nice hot shower!!

Have been working on this piece since last night. It's from a photo I took while in Colorado last summer when I taught at Terry Ludwig's.

It was difficult to take a photo of this piece. The sky is much lighter, as is the background. It also has lots of colors in the background that aren't showing in this photo.

I finally got to work on this some tonight. It's looking better, in my opinion :)

Am still having big problems with lighting in my studio. It seems that if I use my overhead easel lamp which has a daylight bulb in it, my eyes try to compensate and I end up using much darker colors. Then when I turn off the light, it seems like my painting just goes black. I just hate that and I just don't know what to do. If anyone can help, PLEASE!!

P.S. The left trees are not that dark!!

Maple Ridge Jogging Path

In Old Forge there is a hill called Maple Ridge. It was the first ski area Old Forge ever had. This is the jogging path that goes through it. I took the photo on one beautiful day last summer.
Not finished yet. Sorry about the glare. The oils are very wet right now and the photo was taken in my studio with overhead lighting on my easel. 12x16 Oils on Raymar Panel.

Just finished this piece. It was inspired by the beautiful fall aspen trees seen on one of our trips to Buena Vista, Colorado, where we usually go fishing.
Speaking of Raymar panels, they have free shipping this weekend so I bought some much larger sizes, 12"x16" and 14"x18". I think I'm ready to go much bigger!! YAY!!

This is the 'room' I've been painting! Couldn't resist... LOL. I've been doing lots of house stuff and spring cleaning lately and haven't been painting. This room is the only thing I've painted. It's a hallway between our dining room and garage, sort of like a breezeway. The color was a pinkish grey and was very gloomy looking, so I painted it a sunny, warm yellow. It looks so bright and cheery now!

This was an early morning scene that I saw as I walked out onto my front deck one morning. The sun was strong, casting long shadows and it lit up the fluffy white dandelions.

One afternoon I was out taking a walk on the road where we used to live on the other side of Chattanooga. I came upon this fence post, which was a big old trunk of a tree. It was so beautiful because it looked as if there was a bouquet of leaves sticking out of its top. There was actually a little tree growing just an inch away from it on the right which made it look just like a vase. It was just a sweet little sight that made a happy little painting.

What a pleasure it was to paint on this Raymar panel (smooth cotton).

... as we jumped over the fence ignoring the "Posted" signs, we knew there was going to be a wonderful sight to behold just a few more yards around the corner. We hoped we wouldn't get caught and were taking a big chance. You know, these Tennessee folks don't take it kindly when you walk onto their property. They often carry shotguns and they mean business! As we walked around the bend, whispering so no one would here, this sight fell in front of us. WOW!! We knew it would be worth our while!! Obviously, no one saw us so we got lots of photos, jumped back over the fence, got into the car and sped away!! Now that was exciting!!

Can you share a little bit about your art background?

I have loved art since I was small child, doodling on everything I could. In my school years I took as many art classes as possible, I just couldn’t get enough. I come from a long line of artists, but I believe that I only inherited the love of art, not the technical ability. Even though I wasn’t any good at it in school, I kept trying and trying and eventually built up my skills. I am certainly a creative being at my core and I have always felt a yearning to express myself through art.

Which mediums do you work in and why?

I mostly work in pastel and watercolor. The first medium that I fell in love with was oil pastel, back in high school. A few years later, when I got back into making art I took up watercolor. I just loved the spontaneity of it. Shortly after that I discovered soft pastel and realized that it really suited my painting style, much like oil pastel had. I love being able to use a brush and mix my own colors with watercolor and I love getting my hands dirty in pastel.

How often do you paint?

I try to paint every day. If I wasn’t going to college full time I’d probably spend every waking moment in my studio. It’s my safe haven.

How would you describe your painting style?

I would say that my painting style leans toward contemporary realism. I always thought I would be more of a loose and expressive painter, but it turns out that my style is more representational. I’m learning that much like the style of your handwriting, you really cannot choose your painting style; it chooses you. A lot of people tell me that at first glance they cannot tell whether my paintings are photographs or paintings, but I do not aim to achieve photorealism in my work.

Can you tell me a little bit about your painting process?

My painting processes are a little different depending on the medium; however, I always start out my painting with a somewhat detailed drawing (the drawing is more detailed if I’m painting in watercolor). I don’t do thumbnail sketches for compositional or value reasons, even though I probably should. I use photographs for my work and I will alter photos as needed to make an appealing composition. Whether I’m working in pastel or watercolor I tend to build my paintings up slowly with lots of layers to paint in order to achieve the color I’m going for.

Did you set any art goals for this year?

I actually did. I made an entire list. Some of the more important goals were to paint at least four days a week, participate in monthly painting challenges, paint at least 150 pieces this year and continue studying art books regularly.

How has blogging and the internet changed your life as an artist?

The internet has opened up so many doors for me. It has been just a wonderful tool as far as reaching out to people all over the globe. I have what I consider to be dear friends who I only know online, through blogging and other social media sites. I think the internet is a wonderful marketing tool for artists.

Do you have any advice for artists just starting out?

It’s so difficult to find your own voice when you’re first starting out, and I’m actually there now, myself. I have only been painting seriously for about a year. My advice would be to stay true to who you are and paint what you love. Don’t try and paint what others are telling you to, or what you think others will like (this has been a tough lesson for me because I’m a people pleaser). Also, paint as much as you possibly can. This is the only way you will develop your painting style and improve as an artist.

I've been frantically getting ready for my opening tomorrow at the Artisan Depot in Cowan, TN.

This is one of the paintings I'll be delivering today, along with 9 other pieces. My show opens tomorrow at 4:00!

I've been totally renovating my studio and it's almost done. This is just a little peek. More work needs to be done though. Finished photos to follow soon.

These are the drying racks my husband put up for me because I'm painting in oils now. Aren't they cool??? He uses a piece of curved molding (the molding has grooves where the paintings sit) and attaches a piece of quarter round to the bottom and then is attached to the wall with one nail. It securely sits right on top of the door/closet moldings.

Here is a piece I've been working on. I have a beautiful frame that I painted this for.
It's a very odd size at 7 1/8" x 17 7/8".

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!!

Ok, so, don't laugh!! I hear you laughing!!
I'm trying to expand my horizons by not only painting in oils, but also trying to teach myself how to paint still lifes. Here are a couple of little ones I've been working on in the last couple of days. The apples aren't finished yet, but the lemon is done. I actually based the lemon in with a palette knife with was a lot of fun, and then touched it up with a brush. Does it look like a lemon? LOL...

Deleted the apples photo because I'm in the process of finishing it up. Will post a photo when it's dry. It came out pretty good!

This piece was inspired by a photo I took in Arkansas. I love old barns!!

The piece measures 9"x11-3/4". I has a border of 3/8" all the way around on the paper so it can be matted or the border can be cut off if you don't want to use a mat when framing. It is soft pastels on Art Spectrum Colorfix pastel paper. This piece is unframed.

I just love the thought of riding on a train and looking out the window and seeing the Adirondack Mountains and lakes! This piece is unframed.

My New Method - Oils over Soft Pastels with Alcohol Wash - UPDATE

I did an experiment today. I started with a soft pastel underpainting on Uart bonded to matboard. Then I liquified the pastel with rubbing alcohol and a 1/2" flat synthetic paint brush. Let dry. Painted over the whole thing in oils. Worked like a charm!! Here is the piece.

I took a gorgeous photo of the Moose River Plains the last time I was home which inspired this painting. What a view!!! WOW! I think this one is definately a study for a much larger painting.
